We set out this morning to learn about Mesa Verde and learn we did. Ally has had a banner day and earned her first and second Junior Ranger badges. Grandma and Pop are tired! After she and Pop toured Cliff Palace, Ally and Grandma ventured over to Balcony House. This is a beautiful cliff dwelling with access to it by way of a 32' ladder.
When she toured Cliff Palace Ally was disappointed that the Ranger didn't ask for a volunteer. At Balcony House she took the initiative and asked the Ranger if she was going to have a volunteer. The Ranger said she'd love to have a volunteer and Ally could help lead the group . Ally and the Ranger showed us the way to Balcony House.
Without any hesitation Ally climbed that ladder and beamed when she got to the top.
Grandma had fun hanging back taking pictures of Ally and the dwelling with the ceremonial kivas.
She led the group through narrow openings and a tight tunnel. No, that's not me going into that tunnel. I didn't get stuck either! It was a bit tight and you had to go through the initial part on your hands and knees.
We wondered how the Ancestural Puebloans managed to keep their babies and young children from toddling over the cliffs. Ally found out that they made rope out of Yucca and tethered them. Those Moms must have been under constant stress watching over the family. It's a long way down from up there.
At the end of the Balcony House tour the Ranger gave Ally her first Junior Ranger badge for being the best volunteer she'd had all year. What a diplomat! What a happy Ally!
She completed all she needed to do for the Junior Ranger program and then received her second badge of the day. She is one exhausted Junior Ranger, but one happy one.
