We had an image in our minds of Nebraska as being a land of feed lots, ranches, and agriculture. We envisioned flat land - something to pass through to get somewhere else. Were we surprised as we drove south out of South Dakota's Black Hills to Chadron State Park in the Nebraska Panhandle.
It's Nebraska's oldest state park - 1921 -and it is wonderful.
We thought we'd stay a night and then move on but we're having a hard time with the "moving on" part.
The park is 1,000 acres in size and has everything we love. There are great vistas,
and beautiful trails
that are cut through the grasses that form the understory of the pine forests
and take you up and over the hill to the next view of the hills in the distance.
There are wildflowers,
ponds and big shady trees,
cattails and blue spruce,
and a terrific place to camp for a while. There are 70 sites here but it rarely fills. We are one of three rigs here so far this week. We like living on our private ranch here. If you haven't seen enough photos to convince you of the beauty of this part of Nebraska just let me know.....I'll post some more!
